Morecambe have loaned out two of their young players to gain senior experience. Goalkeeper Alfie Scales has joined Workington AFC and Corey Goodyear has moved to Nelson FC, with both deals lasting one month and pending final approvals.

The moves are designed to give the teenagers regular first-team minutes and continue their development. The club wished both players the best of luck for their spells away from the Mazuma Stadium.

Scales steps into Workington gap

Alfie Scales, a 19-year-old academy product, goes straight into the Workington squad for their Northern Premier League clash with Bamber Bridge. His move was prompted by an injury to Workington's goalkeeper Danny Eccles, who was hurt in a match on Tuesday. Workington manager Billy Barr had been seeking defensive cover due to several long-term injuries.

Scales has previous loan experience with Tadcaster Albion and has been involved with Morecambe's first-team setup. "We would like to thank Morecambe FC for their co-operation in arranging the loan and wish Alfie every success during his time at the club," a statement from Workington Reds said. The loan is set for an initial 28 days.

Context for the Shrimps

The loans come as Morecambe prepare for a key home fixture against second-placed Hereford. The Shrimps currently sit 17th in the National League - North standings with 14 points from 11 games, having scored an average of 1.5 goals per game but conceded 1.8. Their recent form shows one win, three draws, and one loss in their last five matches.

Their last match was a 2-1 away defeat to Worksop Town, with Michael Daly scoring a consolation goal in the 87th minute. The club will be looking to bounce back at home, where they have recorded strong wins this season, including a 3-0 victory over Darlington 1883 earlier this month. Alfie Scales is expected to feature for Workington immediately. Morecambe's next fixture is a significant test against a Hereford side that has won four of its last five games.
