30-hour relay to raise money for brain tumour research
Morecambe will host a 30-hour relay run on the promenade from 9am Saturday, August 22 to 3pm Sunday, August 23, raising funds for The Brain Tumour Charity in honour of Rachel. The team from Let’s Run Morecambe and Lancaster Runners, joined by other running friends, will start at the Midland Hotel and run continuously for 30 hours, covering a distance of 1,407km - the equivalent of a run from Land’s End to John O’Groats. At least two runners will be on the promenade at all times.
Event details and schedule
The relay will begin at 9am on Saturday, August 22, and finish at 3pm on Sunday, August 23. After the run, a tea dance organised by Elizabeth Rogers Dance will take place at the Midland Hotel from 3:30pm to 6:30pm on Sunday. Tickets for the tea dance are available at the Midland Hotel.
Rachel’s story and the charity
The relay is organised by the Endure Morecambe 30-Hour Relay and Tea Dance fundraising page. “We are raising funds for The Brain Tumour Charity in honour of our good friend ‘Rachel’,” the page says. Rachel was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) in 2021. She underwent a craniotomy and 12 months of chemotherapy, but the tumour recurred in March 2024. She is now on chemotherapy indefinitely and remains positive. In December 2025, after another recurrence, she received further radiotherapy and is now on new treatment supported by research.
The Brain Tumour Charity is the world’s leading organisation dedicated to brain tumours. It funds research, provides support and aims to find new treatments. The charity’s work is vital because every moment counts for those affected by a brain tumour. The relay organisers hope to raise awareness and generate funding that will keep this crucial research going.
How to support
Spectators are invited to cheer on the runners. The organisers ask anyone who can to donate, saying “every little bit helps us move closer to a brighter future for everyone living with a brain tumour.” A donation link is available on the relay’s fundraising page.
Final details
The relay will start at the Midland Hotel, run along Morecambe Promenade, and finish at the same hotel. The tea dance will follow immediately after the finish. Tickets are sold at the Midland Hotel, and the event is open to all who wish to support the cause.
