Morecambe are in a defensive crisis ahead of their FA Cup tie at AFC Rushden and Diamonds this weekend. Manager Adam Lakeland has confirmed the club has only one fit recognised central defender available.

Jake Cain is out for two to three weeks with a knee problem, while Will Smith remains sidelined with a long-term injury. Captain Liam Hogan, who was forced off at half-time in last weekend's 2-1 National League North defeat to Worksop Town, is now struggling with a back issue.

"Liam is struggling with his back and we will have to see how he is this week," said Lakeland. The manager stressed the squad cannot rely on just two centre-backs and that bringing in defensive cover is an immediate priority.

Lakeland confirms need for defensive cover

Adam Lakeland has reiterated the urgency to sign a new centre-back this week. He said there are a few potential targets on the club's radar and that names have been discussed. The situation is compounded by the team's current league position of 17th in the National League North, with 14 points from 11 games.

Lewis Baines is the sole fit recognised central defender, with young Taelor O'Kane also receiving minutes recently. Lakeland wants the team to treat the Worksop defeat, which saw them concede two early goals before Michael Daly pulled one back, as a bump in the road. He emphasised the need for a reaction, stating the team's goal minutes show they have been competitive, having been level or ahead in matches for 446 minutes this season, while trailing for 504 minutes.

AFC Rushden and Diamonds arrive in good form

The opposition, who play in the Northern Premier League Midlands Division, are in decent form. They sit 10th in their table after a 5-3 win at Long Eaton United last weekend, having recorded four wins and five draws from their opening nine league fixtures this season.

Morecambe's next league fixture is a tough home match against second-placed Hereford on 17 October. Before that, they must handle the cup tie with their defensive resources severely stretched. The full fixtures list shows the challenging run of games ahead, with the visit of Hereford followed by a trip to league leaders Tamworth.
