Morecambe lost 2-1 to Worksop Town in the National League North on Saturday. The Shrimps conceded two goals in three first-half minutes before a second-half fightback fell short.

Kian Harratt opened the scoring for the hosts in the 20th minute, and Charlie Greaves doubled the lead just two minutes later. Morecambe improved after the break and pulled a goal back through Matty Daly in the 66th minute, but they could not find an equaliser. The defeat leaves the club 17th in the table with 14 points from 11 games.

Manager's reaction

Manager Adam Lakeland was scathing in his post-match assessment, pointing to a familiar defensive frailty and a poor performance from the match officials. He described the two-goal concession as "three or four minutes of madness" and said similar errors had cost his side in away defeats at Radcliffe, Southport, and Harborough.

Lakeland's strongest criticism was reserved for the officials. He claimed Worksop's Harratt should have been sent off for an elbow on Cameron Coxe in the first half. "The three officials were not watching the play but the ball during the incident," he said. Lakeland, who has managed over 250 games at this level, called it the worst officiating performance he had seen. He also labelled the addition of only three minutes of stoppage time an "absolute disgrace".

Key moments

Morecambe had started the game well, with Lewis Whitham having a goal disallowed for the hosts in the 18th minute. The quick-fire double from Harratt and Greaves changed the game entirely. Isaac Buckley-Ricketts delivered a dangerous cross that was cleared just before half-time, and Lewis Leigh fired wide early in the second period as Morecambe pushed forward.

The goal came from a move involving substitute Joe Garner, who had replaced captain Liam Hogan at the break. Ben Williams provided the assist for Daly, who finished clinically. "I made no mistake with my finish to halve the deficit," Daly said. Garner, who was involved in the build-up to the goal, added: "I was involved again as the Shrimps threatened."

Morecambe continued to press but could not find a second goal. The result extends a mixed run of form, with three wins, a draw, and this loss in their last five matches. Their next challenge is a home game against second-placed Hereford on 17 October. Check the upcoming fixtures for full details.
